Araks Sahakyan is a young polymorphous artist who has already established herself in contemporary art, having exhibited in numerous institutions and galleries. Her work is ranging from felt-tip drawing and tapestry to performance and multimedia installation - is full of cultural references, reflecting her life story, the memory of her family and her hybrid identity. She was born in Armenia and grew up in Spain before choosing to live and work in Paris.
In her work, Sahakyan is interested in communication with others, the intimate relationships between bodies and, more broadly, the relationship to the living and the violence that this can produce, whether it is bodies that are violated, environmental degradation or war.
Sahakyan's art merges vibrant recollections with flat, illuminated depictions of our modern era. Beneath the captivating surface lies the artist's personal memories, tales of displacement, and collective wounds, communicated through traditional motifs, symbolic imagery, and digital languages. Sahakyan's pieces directly challenge the viewer's perception, offering a timeless yet contemporary portrayal of a world where traditional notions of belonging fade. In a reality where origins are obscure and memory leads to dead ends, displacement, translation, and hybridization define our very existence.
Araks Sahakyan has had the opportunity to study fine arts in several places: the Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne and Central Saint Martins UAL in London, as well as the ENSAPC École Nationale Supérieure d'Arts de Paris-Cergy. She will be part of the summer exhibition 'Mouvement' in cooperation with the French Consulate in Hamburg at Galerie Melbye-Konan.
