We are pleased to share the NDR’s reportage on the powerful and rising artist Yannick Ackah. Born in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, Ackah began painting as a child, supported early on by his family. Today, he is considered one of the most sought-after artists from Africa. He was discovered by gallery director Stella Melbye-Konan, who recognised his potential immediately. Since then, his career has been marked by rapid growth and international attention.
His practice explores themes of racism, colonialism, and identity, often using the mask as a central motif. Influenced by African history, poetry, and contemporary life, Ackah layers fabric, paint, and newspaper to create deeply textured, emotionally resonant works.
This video documents both his first solo exhibition in Hamburg and his quiet, powerful creative process—capturing an artist whose voice continues to rise.
